The Queen

This year's Best Actress Oscar couldn't have gone to anyone other than Helen Mirren, for her portrayal of Queen Bess in this superb drama about the British monarch's crisis in the wake of the death of Princess Diana. Set in a world in which one does not express one's true feelings, the film's strength lies as much in its restraint as in its flashes of wit. Michael Sheen deserves a hearty slap on the back, too, for his pitch-perfect portrayal as a newly-ordained Tony Blair.
