Getting Around

Nagoya is easily accessible by all major means of transportation. It has an international airport, is a stop on the Meitetsu, Kintetsu and JR rail lines - including the Shinkansen - and is easy to get to via major highways. Prepaid cards are available for both the bus and subway systems, and ticket machines take paper money as well as coins.

By Bus
The main city bus terminals are at Nagoya station, Sakae and Kanayama [map P1 C-4]. Standard bus fare is ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for children. There are three main color-coded signs above the windshield of each bus depicting where it is headed to or originating from: green indicates Nagoya Station; purple indicates Sakae; and black indicates Kanayama. The city bus system also has two late night bus routes on weekdays that follow the Higashiyama Line. Route L-1 departs Sakae Bus Terminal [across from Mistukoshi department store] Gate 21 bound for Fujigaoka subway station at 0:45 and 1:15. It departs Fujigaoka bound for Sakae Bus Terminal at 23:55 and 0:20. Route L-2 for Takabata departs the Sakae Bus Terminal Gate 22 at 1:15. Buses from Takabata subway station at 0:28 with several stops on the way to Sakae Bus Terminal [map P12, B-3]. The fare is ¥400 for adults and ¥200 for children.

By Subway
The subway system is the easiest and most convenient form of transportation. Five main lines traverse the city and connect to all major rail links and bus terminals. Subway fares range from ¥200 to ¥320.

By Car
For those coming by car, Nagoya is the "mei" in the Meihan, Meishin and Tomei expressways. Areas around Nagoya can be accessed by a number of local highways such as Routes 41, 19 and 22.

To & From the Airport
Travelers to the airport will arrive directly at the Passenger Terminal Building, while those going from the airport access transportation at the Access Plaza.
Train The new Meitetsu Airport line [kuukou-sen] goes to and from Shin-Nagoya station [28 minutes, ¥850], stopping at Kanayama [15 minutes, ¥790] and Tokoname [10 minutes, ¥300]. Two to three trains run per hour, depending on the time of day.
Bus Both JR and Meitetsu buses connect the airport to a number of cities in and around Aichi. The bus to Nagoya Station costs ¥1000 and takes one hour.
Taxi For those wishing to take a taxi, the trip takes about one hour. You can expect to pay a minimum of ¥10,000 for the ride.
Car The airport is connected to central Nagoya via the Chita Chuo Expressway-Centrair Line. Tolls to the city center run at about ¥1800. The parking lot at the airport has a capacity of 4000 vehicles, and the first 30 minutes are free.
